Assuming for arguments sake that Cheney has had enough of Bush and decides to shoot him. Cheney, being the whiz that he is with a gun, loads the weapon incorrectly and when he fired not only does the bullet hit the target but the rifle explodes taking him out as well. Now the country doesn't have a President or a Vice President..........who takes over. Also, Bill Clinton monkeyed around with this by putting an ineligible person in a line of succession. Who was this and what made thime ineligible?

In your example, the Speaker of the House becomes president and appoints a vice-president under the terms of the 25th Amendment. Following the Speaker is the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and the cabinet secretaries in the order of the creation of their office.

If the next person in the line of succession is ineligible, Henry Kissinger for example, the presidency would devolve to the next person in line.

Who did Clinton put in the line of succession? Richard Nixon's appointment of Henry Kissinger's as Secretary of State put him 3rd after the VP in order of success. Kissinger is not a "natural born citizen," and not eligible.
