A Psychiatrist may prescribe medicine, but does not NEED to. Unfortunately, most feel that Pharmacology is the only way to treat some problems.

The question would be what sort of problems your MOM perceives which would cause her to suggest this. If it is a matter of depression, or internal anger, perhaps finding a therapist whom you trust and could talk out your issues would be a good way to satisfy HER and stay away from the Pharmacology which Psychiatrists seem to favor.

There are many therapists who do NOT subscribe to the "Medicine" route and most are not Psychiatrists. Find one which you feel comfortable with and go a few times (3 is the usual basis for finding a comfort zone before moving on to another). Remember, Mental health is the goal, not just satisfying Mom.

I have a regular psychiatrist that I see every three months. My life was spinning out of control at one time and he helped me through, gave me a diagnosis and some medication and here I am. They are not bad people, but just like anything else shop around and find someone who will be right for your mom, I prefer male doctors to female, so decide who she will be most comfortable with, male or female and take it from there.

Psychiatrists are more for people with some type of clinical psychosis. If you are not nutty, you probably could just see a psychologist with some very good results.
Psychologists can pinpoint the problems and let you know if you should see a psychiatrist or not.
Good Luck

I still go to a psychiatrist. No they are not that bad. But their main job is to prescribe medication. Suggest to your mom that you see a psychologist (therapist) first. If you need a psychiatrist after that, they will refer you to one. However if you aren't willing to work at whatever it is you need to, no amount of professional intervention will work.
