The surface area includes the top and bottom, while the lateral area does not. The difference between those two numbers is twice the area of the base.

128 - 96 = 2b
32 = 2b
16 = b

The base area is 16 yd^2 and it is square, so each edge is sqrt(16) = 4 yards
