The Watergate Scandal refers to the break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC by a team of spies hired by President Richard Nixon's re-election campaign in 1972. The subsequent investigation of that crime uncovered a vast series of crimes committed by Richard Nixon and his staff against political enemies. It involved using branches of government to spy on people and to sabatoge them. Their victims weren't criminals or terrorists - they were simply political foes. The scandal lead to the resignation of Nixon just before the Congress had the chance to impeach him.
There are thousands of books written about it and nearly 2 million web sites on "Watergate scandal". I'd read some of them if I were you.
Perhaps the best place to start would be "All the President's Men" by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. It's a fairly quick read and very engaging. See the movie if you don't want to read.

During Nixon's second presidential campaign, a burglary occurred at the Democratic party offices in the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C., in order to gain knowlege of party secrets and stragety. Nixon disavowed any knowlege of the burglary. Later, (after he had been re-elected), it came out that he knew all about it, and had also misused the powers of his office to gather information about many political foes. He lied about it, obviously, and it created a public storm. He resigned the Presidency, becoming the first president ever to do so. In the meantime, his vice president, Spiro Agnew, had resigned due to a DIFFERENT scandal, and he had appointed then-U.S Representative Gerald R. Ford to the Vice Presidency to replace Agnew. Upon Nixon's resignation, Ford became President. He was the only person to date to serve as president who had never been elected as either president or vice-president in a general election. Shortly after Ford took office, he pardoned Nixon, which angered many Americans. In the election in 1976, Ford was defeated by James Earl ("Jimmy") Carter.

I was around at the time and I worked on getting Jimmy Carter elected , and when the Nixon B,S, was going on every body was really puzzled as to why, as every politician has at least tried to steal campaign secrets from their opponents, so they could design a opposing strategy, Nixon simple lied and said he didn't know an hing about this burglary, but the Zionist new;s media didn't like Nixon so they pushed it to the limit and printed many lies and innuendo.s about Nixon the stories were sensationalized and they tricked the public into believing this garbage, but, they accomplished what they wanted , mainly to show other politicians, YOU HAD BETTER NOT SAY OR DO ANY THING AGAINST Israel OR THE ZIONIST, OR WE WILL BREAK YOU, so ever since Nixon our politicians have kissed Zionist butt and found nothing wrong with them killing women ,Children, or any other atrocity they decided to commit,

Please Google Watergate. It is a long and somewhat complicated thing. It is an issue that still is being debated.
I found it to be the end of innocence between our country and the people. I feel that is when people really started questioning our presidents and what they did and are doing. Please read it.It would take two pages to really explain it.It is really fascinating.
Great Question for those who were not old enough to remember.
