I will be participating in my first Social Dance Competition and would like to provide a Boutonniere for my instructor to wear during the event. I'm just not sure if this is proper grooming for this type of event. Would this be a good idea?

You should check with the competition organizers what is the dress code / costumre restrictions. Dancesport competitions don't allow it for sure, but Social Dance may be different. Well in the worst case he'll be asked to remove it. Whether it is appropriate or not depends a lot on what is he going to wear, i.e. if it fits the style.

It is certainly appropriate. Just have your partner stand in front of you so that you do not pin it in a place that would catch her on the chin or forehead. It would definitely interrupt your rhythms if she were jabbed in the face with a pin! Also, make sure that the size of the boutonniere is in keeping with your outfit -- too small and it looks like an afterthought--too large and it looks ostentatious. Ask you florist about a good size, and good luck!
