Communism failed in both the USSR and China. The Chinese economy was a stalled mess until the ruling cabal abandoned communist economics entirely and returned to a market economy.
The "Communist Party" continues to maintain power as a dictatorship. But the Chinese system is in no sense communist and hasn't been for years.
As for why communism doesn't work as an economic system--that's a complex issue. But put simply--when you abolish market systems entirely, you remove all incentive for performance and all checks on bureaucracy. That leads to low production and failed allocation of resources. A market provides the vital feedback that is needed to guide production. Without it, the production system fails.

This is an interesting Q. You get a star!
Here are my guesses:
-USSR had a number of nationalities and ethnicities that were not Russian and hated the Russians calling all the shots.
-Reagan's arms race was more focused on the USSR than China, so they (and we) were losing money really fast.
-USSR seemed to have everyone employed, but many not really working, just showing up and drinking Vodka, while China's workers really were forced to work.
-The USA (among others) started buying China's products years ago but wouldn't deal with USSR.
But, I wouldn't say that "communism has succeeded in China"
Their capitalist reforms have stimulated business there quite a bit.

communism never failed, because communism never succeeded.
A so called stable communist country like USSR is not what it seems, in the interior it is fraught with civil unrest, it's people are resisting this goverment, this sytem.
The same is for China, demonstrations happen every now and again, and every now again bloody crack downs are initiated, we hear it all the time.
what I am trying to say is communism never succeeded in a sense that Democracy succeeded, that the people never truly happily accepted this form of system.
Truth and freedom will always prevail, but sadily, freedom is not free.

The USSR and China did not have good relations during the Cold War era. The answer is multi-faceted but if you've read a translation of "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu, Chinese diplomatic, economic and military tactics are not hard to understand.
Stalin/Lenin jailed and exterminated a vast numbers of people loyal to the Tzar, but it can't be compared to the genocide of Mao's revolution. Mathmatically. Estimates around 50-70 million.

communism is failing in China. It just doesn't provide the economic growth the people want.
They are moving toward a system which amounts to having a military government with collective leadership.
Come to think of it, this isn't much different than the historical Chinese regimes of an Emperor backed up by his army. They just have a new way of choosing Emperors.

The Chinese didn't spend themselves into an economic black hole building up an expensive military force that couldn't get out of it's own way. Something like the current Bush Junta and their insane policy of sending 70 ton tanks to patrol the streets of Baghdad. Instead the chinese thugocracy built up its economic base to actually compete with 'capitialism'. The Chinese are still thugs, but now they're thugs with trillions of US dollars that they're using to buy up US debt and facilities. All of this was pointed out years ago by those 'liberal' university professors, but they never got past the trans-national corporate shills that convinced the public that 'free trade' was the best thing since sliced white bread. Now we're screwed! That's history!

There are different systems of Communism just as there are different systems of Democracy. Different strokes I suppose.
There are many reasons why Chinese Communism has lasted and the Russian one did not - one is that the Russians started theirs a long time before the Chinese.
Success is a debatable issue.

China is suucceeding only because they went to a modified version of capitalism. As such, the western world is allowing their form of communism to survive by buying their goods. If we were to stop buying their goods, they would face the harsh choices of either:
a) Allowing full-blown capitalism in the form of outside ventures moving in to begin harvesting their natural resources; or
b) Implode.

Because the entire Bolshevik takeover of Russia was by Zionists who wanted to, and still do, destroy the Russian and Slavic peoples.
The same happened with NATO bombing of Yugoslavia- Serbia.
