It a bit like the fascination that many people find in watching a road accident or a shark attack.

Yeah the American media does give them all the intention. In fact, they place the royals right there with the Hollywood celebrities.

I think that is kind of degrading. The Hollywood Celebrities are not honourable at all.

But mostly I think it is because the Americans don't have a royal family and they may pay more attention to it because they were once our colonies.

I don't think it is as much a fascination with the British royal family, but with the Mother Country itself; the royals simply receive more publicity than anyone else (except quite possibly former Beatles, the Spice Girls, Elton John, and J. K. Rowling).

Then again, since the United States Constitution forbids any hereditary titles, Americans are consequently very taken with them. Obviously, this love for all things British goes back a long way--remember Nancy Astor and Jenny Jerome Churchill. It must be those "classy" British accents.

For some reason we as Americans are fascinated with celebrities in general (remember, for days the biggest news story was Paris Hilton's in-and-ot jail stint, sadly enough.) I guess the royal family falls into that "celebrity"category too. It kind of makes people feel better to see that even rich, famous people have problems too.

I am an American and don't care one whit about the British royal family now. It's not that I hate them or anything like that. I just don't find them interesting at all.

I did watch specials, etc. when Diana was alive. I liked her.

It's because sometimes the press doesn't find anything else to tallk about, plus, America has no kind of Royal Family, so its always exciting for some people to hear about them. Also, the Royal family are considered celebs, so to some people, hearing their gossip is as important as hearing about Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears.

Because we haven't had any of our own royalty since the Kennedys were in the White House, unless you count Princess Grace of Monaco. And even she died 25 years ago. George Bush could never pass for royalty even if his name is George.

I have no idea. But then I'm American, and I have no idea whether the current Queen is Elizabeth, Elizabeth II or
Elizabeth X. Guess I'm not fascinated.
