Wiping the hard drive may not get rid of them.
Get a good anti virus software program, identify the viruses, ask program to sort and delete, or look on Symantec web site for fix tools.

I have very good anti-virus software but some viruses still get through. -- The best solution I have found is very drastic. Re-install your operating system. This will re-format the hard drive concerned and get rid of any virus.
My other solution (which I found by accident) is this: I bought and installed a 250GB ( F: drive) as a secondary/slave hard drive. Everything I have which I cherish or depend on, I put there. The operating system I put on the smaller drive (C: drive). Any virus seem to affect on the C: drive and so my installing the OS on the C: drive I save anything which is on the F: drive. The secondary drive never seems to be affected.
I can recommend TWO anti virus software :
McAfee Internet Suite and PC-Tools SpyWare Doctor.

If, the Operating System was pte-installed then reboot the computer and as it is rebooting Press F11 and follow the on screen instructions. If this does not work then reboot and as it is rebooting Press F11 and CTRL together. The final method is to Press F10 and ALT together. One or all of the afore-mentioned procedures will revert the computer to factory condition which means that only, the pre-installed programmes will be available. All other programmes and files will be lost. Also go to www.download.com and download Free AVG Anti-virus and Ad-Aware 2007. Then go to www.superantispyware.com and download the Free Version. Next go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove and scroll down to see if Search Assistant or My Way Search is installed. If it is then remove it as it is Adware.

You could wipe the hard drive and re-install from the recovery disks. It is a long job and not to be tackled lightly..
If you do not have recovery disks, get hold of a good antivirus software, install it and run a scan. It should repair and remove viruses. It will also protect in the future, provided it is kept up to date.
There are some site on-line that claim to clean up viruses but some are just installing their own Trojan Horse as part of the process. Be carefull.

First thing to do would be install an antivirus program. I suggest a free antivirus program, or if you are willing to spend money, purchase NOD32 or kapersky. If the installation of these works, then you have no probems. If you need to wipe the Hard drive, you will need an operating system CD (windows CD) Put this in the CD drive and let it boot. From there, follow the instructions to format the partition that the old operating system was on and reinstall the operating system on the newly formatted partition.

If you have a copy of windows xp, me or such then yes, you can reinstall the disks which will wipe the hard drive. If you only have the boot up disks that came with the pc, I believe they do the same.
BUT if you really have no idea what you're doing, it may be easier to take it somewhere that can do it and also have the peace of mind it'll probably have some kind of warranty.
Also download AVG its free and will virus scan and hopefully either delete the virus' or at least quarantine them.

forget about Symantec's Norton, its usless. download spyware terminator, its free and it works very well with your exsisting software, where as other free anti virus stuff may clash.
attacking spyware, will usually control the virus from spreading further in the computer. then you may be able to see if the computer is salvageable before wiping your data away. Linux systems kill windows, and may be your last resort, however, most viruses can be cleaned off safely.
