Well, this depends on the laptop, but as long as you have an ISP and the proper equipment, all you have to do is use your wireless connection (IF YOU HAVE A WIRELESS ROUTER ONLY!), or hook up your ethernet port directly to the modem. The ethernet port I'll explain, since you sound like a complete noob to this. The ethernet port is what you use when you have a DSL (Digital Subscriber's Line) or Broadband, and allows for a direct connection to your laptop or desktop. It essentially looks like the wires you hook up your phone with, but they're a lot wider. That's because the line needs to be able to get more data (phones operate in a similar manner, and if you have DSL, the line IS hooked up to your phone, which is my setup with my computers) in and out the line. Anyhow, if you're using the old first or 2nd gen 28k or 56k lines that inevitably mean slow service, then you just plug it into a modem (ironically, most laptops still come equipped with these archaic devices, though I've never had use for it, since I have built in wireless, ethernet, and modem) line and dial up with whatever available numbers your ISP provides for you. By the way, I recommend the HP dv8315 laptop, which, if you can afford it, costs around $1200. If you don't need a mid-end laptop (in other words, you're one of those people who doesn't play computer games), just about any laptop will do. But if you can afford it, get an HP laptop, since they're the best in their class overall, and for a good reason: Hewlett Packard was one of the first modern computer companies out there (they were founded in the early 80's, at the beginning of what historians call the computer revolution. But whatever you buy, make sure to take good care of it, because these things don't maintain themselves, and, as you would gather from their size, they're extremely difficult to repair.
I've found some good sites for choosing a laptop and keeping it running:
For a list of processes that make the computer tick:

To find yourself a good laptop online and maybe get a better deal than the retail of best buy:
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/prodserv/notebooks_tabletpcs.html
To get a list of laptop maintainence tips:

And then I recommend you get System Mechanic (the newest version should be available at your nearest computer retail store (though Best Buy would work too) and PcCillin Internet Security (it currently takes up the least resources and has always been the least hassle-filled security suite, just remember to shell out $60 for the newest version every year or renew your subscription online.
Anyhow, I think I've given you more than enough to get you on your way and keep your laptop going. After this, I'd say you're pretty much on your own! And remember: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

The same way as a desktop or you can call your ISP and they will send you a modem for wireless -- there is not cost for the modem and high speed is $2.00 per month more than high speed wire. But you get 300 free games for signing up for wireless.
sorry it's called a router also the installation steps are 1) plug in and turn on router. It will do things for about five minutes and then when all the lights are on you just log in normally, new laptops make all the changes to itself automatically.

The same way you use the Internet on a desktop pc.
Laptops have a RJ 45 network port built in. You connect the RJ 45 port via a straight CAT5 cable to a network switch.
Many laptops also have a built in wireless capability. If it does not have one built in, you can purchase a pcmcia wireless card and install it in the pcmcia slot. If you have a wirless access point on your LAN you can connect via wireless capabilitity. A wireless port on the lap top also allows you to connect to wireless hot spots.
Unless you have public wireless hot spot capability at your residence you will need an ISP feed to your residence.

You connect it to a wireless router with a wireless adaptor, or you plug it into the phone line, or you connect it to an ethernet router with some CAT-5 cable, or you connected it to an ADSL line with a USB ADSL router.
All of these options will require that you acquire an Internet service separately, with the exception of connecting to a wireless router which you can supply yourself, but which there are also public services available, typically provided by coffee shops for use by their customers.

Same way you would on a PC. Browser to access over you ISP connection.
If you are asking how do you connect your laptop to your ISP then there are a number of options:
Wireless - typically a built in card these days which will connect to an available wireless hub or router
Cable to LAN - RJ45 connection from the network card on your laptop to the socket on wall/router or hub
Cable to ADSL hub/router (as LAN)
Cable to dialup - as LAN, but modem cable to telephone socket
GPRS/GSM Specialist mobile PCMCIA cards with their own inbuilt modems to access mobile telephony networks
SAT - Specialist Satellite PCMCIA cards with their own inbuilt transceivers to access satellite communications
Enough choice?

You need to have an internet provider at home such as bt broadband. If you want your laptop to be wireless then they will send you a router and instructions to install it.

Most laptops have a built in Wi-Fi. There are allot of places that advertise "Wi-Fi hot spot" Free Wi-Fi etc. Or you can plug it in to a hard phone line as long as you have a provider.
