Okay I'm having pelvic/abdominal ultrasound today and the doctor said I couldn't eat or drink for 8 hours before it, but she aslo said I had to have a full bladder. How can I have a full bladder if I can't drink?

Good question, as usually you are supposed to drink 4 large glasses of water an hour before you go. Best phone the clinic to find out what you are supposed to do.

Your doctor is giving you bad information. You can eat and drink before a pelvic ultrasound. It will not make a difference in the ultrasound result.
In order to fill your bladder, you should drink a glass or 2 of water approx 2 hours before the exam so your bladder will be full during the exam.
Most of the time, we just tell our pts not to urinate before the ultrasound and it will be fine.
I am a hospital nurse, and we do these test every day.
Doctors are usually not well informed on preps for tests thats why the nurse has to tell them everything. Most MD's are clueless about exam preps.
The only time you do not drink or eat before an ultra sound is when they are looking at your liver and gall bladder.
Good luck.

Where I work, the prep for an abdominal u/s is NPO (nothing by mouth) after midnight the night before the exam (if the exam is in the morning). If the exam is in the afternoon, we ask you be NPO for 6 hours. This is because the act of eating creates abdominal gas, and that will interfer with the visualization of the abdominal organs. Also, after eating, the gallbladder contracts and releases bile. You cannot visualize an empty gallbladder with u/s.

For a pelvic u/s, we ask that you drink 24 oz. of water, one hour before the procedure. You can only do a transvaginal u/s with an empty bladder.

For both an abdominal and pelvic u/s, we would ask you to be NPO, except for the 24 oz. of water.

Call the facility for clarification regarding your prep. You don't want to show up for your appointment only to be turned away because you are not prepped properly.
