There you go. You've answered your own question. You're black, you run your own business, you've traveled extensively.
I'm a white female, run my own business and have also traveled extensively. I've never relied on the NOW movement or government help. I took advantage of the freedoms that we're given.
Should Socialism become embedded, that will all disappear for those who want to truly make something of themselves. :)

Good comments thus far. In no other country on Earth are opportunities for advancement equal to what exists in the USA. The only thing holding anyone back is their own lack of ambition and initiative.
To comment a little on the school issues raised by joeybagofdonnuts, his point is valid as far as the condition of many inner city schools, the cause is less clear. More money is spent on those schools, as a rule, than almost all other schools, yet the performance still lacks. There is a chicken and egg thing going on that will remain a conundrum until the inner city communities take it upon themselves to make their lives better. Money would be much better spent on books, computers, and teachers than resource officers, metal detectors, and new windows, paint, fences, etc. Unfortunately, the destruction and violence that is a part of life in those schools misdirects the higher funding into less productive areas, creating a downward spiral.
It is not up to outsiders to clean that mess up. It is the responsibility of the parents, families, and residents of those areas to fix it. Without their complete buy-in, it's just a waste of time, money, and resources.

As far as the law is concerned it is. As far as what happens on the ground it is not always so. The most striking example would be education. While I think that the black community in this country needs to do a little soul searching as to why their children fair so poorly in comparison to those of other ethnicity's, the state of decay of the schools they attend and the poor performance of many of their teachers makes reversing this totally unacceptable trend that much harder. It seems two faced to tell kids about the importance of going to school and than not providing a school which is conducive to learning. Other than that, I think the system generally works with some problems but that over all you get out what you put in. Unless if you're a women, than you get out a little bit less than us guys.

There is more opportunity in America than in any other place in the world.
Keep in mind, that even a hundred years ago when racism and sexism were at their heights, there were still a few black female millionaires in this country.
Anything is possible in America.

It is an equal opportunities country PROVIDED that the person applying has the education and experience. Unfortunately the school system is biased particularly favoring white stream America. Experience can only add value unless if the applicant has the education.

Why would I have to bear that in mind, and yes for those who wish to succeed... it is a land of equal opportunities, for the most part!
