Good question, the role of the government is to take care of its people, not the people of other countries. Those countries have their own government to care for their people.

I would agree that it is the job of the government to take care of our infrastructure, but I would challenge that it is the government's job to create jobs for us or otherwise "make our lives better." It is the job of government to not put any obstacles in our paths, but rather get out of our way and let us go after our dream. A thriving economy where employers are hiring and expanding produces the jobs...not the government.
Edit: To IM_Foxygirl. Actually, I agree with you. Although the above is what the government SHOULD be doing, it has NOT been doing it's job for a very long time.

People here say it's not the governments place to make life better for Americans. Then in that same respect it should not make life worse either. Passing policies that outsource our jobs? Not enforcing our laws and letting illegals flood here, taking our jobs, taxing our school system, our law enforcement....
The policies in Washington are absolutely affecting us in our workplace.
If these people that are saying the government is not responsible for creating jobs then they have to admit that the government should not be supporting corperations!
And as far as our infrastructure....it's OUR tax money and we better start using it for our country.
We all must contribute to our roads, bridges, dams, etc. It's our country, our house. It's where we live.

I agree with Texican almost completely. The duty of the American Government is laid out in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights.
If we were obedient to the US Constitution and Bill of Rights that government would make the life of American people better, of course, by protecting our freedoms like Texican said. We're not even supposed to be elsewhere.

This is a querry for the American Government. It must also be one of the criteria to make the governance work out and keep running. Seek it's explanation and you'll know there must be some vested interests in doing all these and without which can't run at all.

The job of our government is to maintain the status quo. To make certain that business and property ownership is protected for the ruling elite and to improve the profitability of the elite. Government also makes an effort to pacify those who are not elite to prevent them from becoming a bother to the elite and to ensure they are capable and willing to serve their betters as needed. This means a basic amount of education and police protection must be provided and major disasters or problems must be dealt with. Every thing else is window dressing.
It may sound terrible but that is the true function of government and it always has been.

If you are talking about the federal government, its job is to insure each citizen's constitutional rights, regulate interstate commerce, and provide for a common defense, nothing more.
It is the job of state governments to provide the climate and the infrastructure for its citizens to prosper.

The job of the Government is to "Govern". That means protect us from enemies foreign and domestic. That means make laws that provide for the people to insure domestic tranquility.
It is the peoples job to make their lives better, not the governments. As far as aid to our allies, that is in the peoples best interest to insure domestic tranquility, peace, and trade. How long do you think we would survive as a nation without allies, and without other nations buying our products? We tried Isolation once, it was a miserable failure, and became what is known as "The Great Depression."

both.
As the goverment of America, it's priority should be the health and security of its people.
As the world's superpower, a democratic superpower, it's responsibilty should be to promote democracy, and security across the globe, and funnily enough the peace and security of the globe will benefit America too.

Neither, but sometimes our politicians get confused as to what their real purpose is in life.
The US government was never intended to make anything, except a strong and secure Republic.
