could a defective thermostat be the cause of my cooling fans not coming on?

the thermostats job is to start and stop the water circulation of the water through the radiator and the engine. when thermostats malfunction they usually stop the water circulation causing the engine temperature to rise. when that happens the cooling fans start working all the time because engine tepm. is high.
go to a car electrician and tell him to check if you fans work or not..

Yes. You have a thermostat in the engine and you have one on the cooling fan. If the car is overheating and the fan is not coming on, replace it. If the fan is coming on and it is still overheating, then replace the cooling system fan in the engine. To make sure which one it is, go out and start the car and let it sit and idle until it reaches operating temp and stand there and see if the fan is coming on or not. You can bypass the switch until you can get one and this will enable you to operate the car until you can get it replaced. Good luck.

It could be if the engine temp is not getting hot enough. If its over heating it could be the thermo switch for the fan. This switch is sometimes mounted on the side of the radiator.

i guess you could say that ...if engine is not coming up to tempature there is no need for fans to come on..
