I work for a very small company in Pennsylvania . My hours are 7:30-4:30pm with a one hour unpaid lunch break. When we work over time we work 7am-5:30pm with a half hour lunch break. Our shop is stifling hot and we have no other breaks during the day. Recently we were told we have to clock in 5 minutes early (NOT PAID), clean the bathrooms on OUR time, cut our unpaid lunches to go to company meetings, and we're only allowed 1 trip to the bathroom. Are we being taken advantage of? or is this all allowed to go on in small companies?

They are using you, dont let them walk over you. Go get another job and dont even tell them you are leaving, wait for yor last paycheck then just dont show up for work again.

Hell, if my boss told me I am only aloud one batchroom break,, LOL,,I dont even wanna imagine what my office will smell like,, or my pants for that matter,, and I feel sorry for my co-workers, they will hae to state another rule "that you have to supply your own gas masks as well!" LOL (,") phew.

I live in California and this is totally against the law here. You should probably contact your state's Labor Board to find out the laws there. In some small towns I've seen people taken advantage of because if you won't do it, someone else will. Do you really want to work for such an immoral person/company?

Think better of yourself and go after a better job-you deserve it.

It is against the law for your employer to make you do work and not get compensated for it. Sadly there are alot of employers who try and bend the rules and hope they don't get caught. Each state has their own rules on breaks. Mostly...you are allowed a 30 minute break every 8 1/2 hours. They are not required to pay you for it however.

I suggest leaving this company. If they are attempting to make you work without pay.....then they are doing more than just that.

This sounds like you are being taken advantage of. Check with your state labor board. The real answer comes down to how much you need the job, as once you start to rebel, your employer may find an excuse to fire you. If this happens, try to have documentation of all the things that your employer wants, as you may later have a case for an unfair labor practice law suit.

Call the Pennsylvania State Labor Commission, as they can give you the best answer. I only know that you cannot be required to work without pay, that you are allowed breaks, and that you are allowed a lunch break. I think that your employer is taking advantage of you, so please speak up, because it isn't fair to you or to the people you work with.

Good luck.

Definitely contact the labor commission in your state. Slimy employers like yours will pull that crap only as long as they have uninformed employees that will take it. He is obviously one of those people that thinks he's doing you a favor by allowing you to work for him (like you couldn't get another job.) My last employer was like that.
