All kinds of things can. Some common things are:

OS/Software:

Viruses
SpyWare/Adware

Hardware:

Static electricity
Water
Too much dust
Overheating
Component failure (ie: CPU fan fails, CPU overheats)

There's alot more, but those are some basics. :)

Having worked in the computer business for over 15 years, some of the more intersting ones I have seen...

A lady who took her laptop home, was using it in the bedroom, and her husband joined her there. Her explaination was they forgot it was on the end of the bed.... (I leave the rest to your imagination)

A executive who had his laptop run over by a car -- while it was setting on his desk in his office. The driver of the car was the husband of the exec's "girlfriend". We suspect he was not aiming for the laptop)

We had a Unix server which got submerged when a water pipe broke over the top of it. So a co-worker set up a space heater to try to dry it out overnight to see if it was salvable. Except the heater shorted out and set the PC on fire.

Finally, we had a PC in Texas that got hit by a piece of the space shuttle Columbia when it broke up a few years back. Destroyed the system board, but was able to recover the hard drive.

So, if I had to list things that can damage a computer, I would have to include marriage, adultery, fire and water, and NASA.

(LOL)
