I would like to know what single English verb would mean making someone give up something or refuse to do something. Is there such a thing at all?

Dissuade (means persuade someone NOT to do something). That's the closest that I can come up with right now -- it's not exactly what you're looking for but it's hard to find just one word that means what you want.
