Generally, no. Everything has basically gone down hill in the city since the shooting of MLK in 1968. Race relations have intensified despite formal desegregation, and you better not be the "wrong" color in the "wrong" part of town at anytime. You must also stay away from West Memphis, Arkansas; one of America's most dangerous small towns.

Away from heavily-patroled Beale St., Memphis is grimy. It's a shame, because I love a lot of what Memphis has to offer. But, contrary to popular belief, Graceland is in a really bad area of town and you best not go down there after sunset. Trust me!

In Shelby County, stay out toward Germantown, about 20 miles SE of Downtown Memphis. Your best areas, otherwise, will be in Desoto County, Mississippi.

Like all major cities Memphis has it's good and bad areas. But if you ask if the inner city itself is "safe" I'm afraid not. The safest areas are east and southeast of town. My favorite area is Germantown. But the city itself has some really great music and food and can be a wonderful place to visit.
