I've noticed that among recent immigrant children. Presumably some are Indian and imagine that dogs are dirty, though I am sure that when they get sick they catch it from another human, not an animal (not sure whether the idea is Muslim or Hindu). And children from the West Indies, and I assume it is because they haven't had pets. Some countries have large swarms of homeless dogs that are not protected from disease, and even I hesitate to pet them when I am in those countries just in case. I have also heard black parents yell at their kids not to touch a dog on a lease. Not sure why unless they think they are not welcome to do it if the owner of the dog is white. But the kids may get scared not knowing why they are told not to touch the dog.

YIKES, put the word "most" in a question, and just look at all the hostility!!!
IT IS true that SOME dogs exhibit FEAR when meeting dark skinned individuals (I'm trying to be very careful with my words) USUALLY because those dogs have been raised by LIGHT skinned individuals - DARK skin LOOKS DIFFERENT and sometimes smells different due to the nice oil in their soft smooth skin - and guess what??? That CONFUSES Fido, so Fido gets MAD and barks and/or bites!
NOW, if I were a smooth skinned dark person and this happened to ME - even once - I sure would not be ready and willing to be close to dogs!! WOULD YOU??

Most likely because dogs were used to control black folks when they were slaves. The memories are still about their families and dogs are still used in some backward countries.

Why does everybody need to turn this question into a racist sterotype thing. That isn't the way it was meant. I will get with my black friends that are deathly afraid of dogs and ask them and get back to you since people are taking this question way too seriously!!!!!
No, he isn't wrong.
And I am not being a racist.
We stayed with some friends last summer and they live in an all black, colored, however you care to have me say it, neighborhood. Real nice people...everybody that we got to know, and didn't get to know, were scared to death of my Golden Retriever and the worst thing she could do would lick you to death.

Um what are you talking about?
Why would they be afraid of dogs? They're no different to asians, causcasians etc. all the other racial groups. Yeah everyone is different but what makes you think you can stereotype an entire race.

I'm black and I'm scared of dogs...not little ones...but I don't like dogs what so ever big or small. I wish they never existed.
This is not b/c I'm black Its b/c I've had some really bad experiences. I would be terrified if I were white, asian or latina. Don't matter.
It is true that in Africa, the bahamas and so on, they don't try to befriend dogs like americans. They are animals...they are animals.
I know someone whose mother was approched by a pit while minding her biz walking down the street. She picked up a stick and bopped that dog on the nose b/c it tried to bother her....she freakin broke the dog's nose.
Thats a cultrual thing. We don't generally have compassion for animals ( we don't all abuse them either ) particularly common animals you see everyday ( dogs, cats ), like whites do. I'm not speaking for all blacks. Some own pets and really love them like it were their own child.

black people tend to get pits and make them mean and the old saying is the thing that you do tend to come back and bite you thus this is why black people are afraid of dogs
