Each city has its good points and bad points. I have lived in both and like both but for different reasons. The climate is very different in each. Melbourne has hot dry summers and cool to cold wet winters; Brisbane has warm wet summers and mild dry winters. Melbourne in summer is far more pleasant than Brisbane as it doesn't have the humidity that Brisbane has. If you like skiing in winter, you can make a day trip to the snow from Melbourne but you are 1500km away in Brisbane.
Presumably you will be getting a job in Melbourne or Brisbane so I would look at job availability and choose the city with the better prospects. Whichever you choose, you will enjoy it. You could look at the newspapers from each, The Age in Melbourne http://www.theage.com.au and the Courier Mail in Brisbane http://www.couriermail.com.au
On a Saturday, both papers will have classified advertisements for jobs and housing so you will be able to compare the two.

Brisbane is my state capitol. It is a big country town compared with the cosmopolitan Melbourne (a much more upmarket expensive place to live) Brisbane has a laid back lifestyle and the best beaches and better climate than Melbourne - it depends what you want, culture from Melbourne or easy, cheaper lifestyle from Brisbane and the beaches.

It depends on what your looking for really. If you want to live in a big city go for Melbourne but if you don't want that go to Brisbane.
Melbourne has crap beaches but so does Brisbane, its just Brisbane is close to some awesome beaches. If you want the beach go to sydney!

I guess, if you like the changing seasons, art galleries, museums, a very culturally diverse community and good public transportationt, then live in Melbourne.
If you like hot summer weather, warm winter days and mild winter nights, a diverse community, beaches and an endless list of activities, then live in Brisbane.

Melbourne. I would only reccommend Perth if you love the Beach. Melbourne has nice beaches but they are about 1.5 hours away. Nice Perth beaches are 10-15 minutes away. Melbourne has everything else over Perth, the shopping is the best, the food is the best, and there will always be something to do here. The only issue might be the weather, Melbournes random weather can get pretty anoying sometimes.
