it's funny because I was watching back to the future 2 the other night wondering the same thing.
I figure people are bad enough drivers on the road.you don't want to have to worry about them flying into the roof of your house.

Medicine and computers have made the most advances since 1950.
You've got Viagra and Vicodin, among other designer drugs now.
Reattachment surgery, in vitro fertilization, and eradication of diseases like polio are way up there, too on the success meter.
The phenomenon of the Internet and World Wide Web also gets a nod in the 'extreme science' category since the 1950s.
All told, I think we're doing pretty well on the advancement chart. Now if we could just get people to let go of 2000 year old books with irrelevant nonsense . . . .

The technology is there, but it will take a long time before its developed enough for things like flying cars and hovercrafts to replace vehicles as we know them. If you think about it, our entire system of roads and laws would have to be changed to accommodate such things. I doubt we'll ever see those things as a reality, but that's what people said about flying. then the airplane was invented. We'll see.

what about an ATM card ?
"You'll be able to pay for everything, including getting cash, with a plastic card" that was a 1950's prediction.
Check out the movie "Metropolis" made in the 1930's

Because back then in 1950, the year 2000 seemed like a lopng time away and they would have more advanced technology.

The main question in my mind is who would pay for it all. Money and logistics are usually the stumbling blocks to progress.
