same effect how can i defend myself in a legal way without it costing an arm and a leg

Legally, there is nothing that can be done unless this person threatens to physically harm you or engages of a provable pattern of harrassment after you have asked them to stop.

Usually venomous ex-friends continue to try to communicate with other ex-friends because on some level, they want the relationship to continue, even if it is as an adversarial one; best offense is a good defense.

Set up your e-mail to block any future correspondence from this person and if you receive a letter in the mail that is obviously from that person, mark it "REFUSED-RETURNED TO SENDER" unopened. If you do open something by mistake, tear it up without reading it. By not responding or acknowledging them in anyway is taking away their power and control over you.
