Maybe cause it is also a lot easier to kill an elephant than an ant. And elephants seem more useful, to humane kind
But I really like your question, it is nice to shed a bit of light on our priorities once in a while. Just to check in with what we consider normal and acceptable and why!
Like why the death of an American or European is more important than the death of a brown person.

because there aren't that many elephants and there is only a limited amount of new ones born every year. However there are billions upon billions of ants with billions more born anyway so the death of a few isn't going to make a lot of difference. Plus Elephants are more intelligent

The death of even one elephant will effect the spices as a whole, but the death of one ant will not, in any way, make any impact on that ant spices at all...

It isn't. But humanity has fought so hard to keep ants from invading their property. And ants also have large thriving numbers, whereas elephants do not, therefore causing man to feel more sympathetic towards the elephant. We do not understand the value of life, no matter how small it may seem.

I do see your point but:
1. An elephant is a much more complicated and intelligent animal to die.
2. There are many, many, many, many, many, many, many, more ants than elephants to lose.
3. Elephants can communicate with us, as well as the fact that they are mammals like us (which both subconciously and emotionally affect human judgement and value)
4. You lose an elephant, and that's one hell of a lot more biomass to dispose of.

Cos we hardly notice an ant is around, but that doesn't mean the elephant is more important, it just seems that way to us.

They represent the death of a kind and gentle beast, that just wanted to be left alone. As for human psyche "out of sight, out of mind" that expresses the ants importance to man...

because elephants are mammals and ants are insects. Why do people cry when thier cat dies and yet no one batters an eyelid when a species of dolphin becomes extinct?
