I used to be told that it wasn't normal to have cramping after a pap smear and then when I ran in to this problem myself back in June (it was the first time) I got very scared and went back to my doctor to have this checked out. I found out from my doctor that yes it is normal for some women to have cramping after a period.
The reason it can occur is because the brush that is used to take some of the cells from the cervix for analysis is being an irritant to the cervix.

ask your family doctor.
A Pap smear is a simple test that can help prevent cancer of the cervix. Pap smear testing saves lives. If women had regular pap tests, 90% of cancer of the cervix would be prevented. During a Pap smear, your doctor takes a sample of cells from your cervix to be tested. The cervix is the part of your uterus (womb) where blood flows through when you have a menstrual period.
To take the sample, your doctor will gently put a special instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This helps open your vagina so the doctor can see your cervix and a sample can be taken. Your doctor may gently clean your cervix with a cotton swab and then collect a sample of cells from your cervix with a small brush, a tiny spatula or a cotton swab. This sample is put on a glass slide and sent to a laboratory to be checked This exam only takes a few minutes. It is very important to stay relaxed to help make it more comfortable for you.

Yes it is normal and okay.
It is because when you get a pap smear, they insert instruments into you, and they put it kind of far into you, so that will cause some discomfort. Sorry I dont know the technical terms. Its kind of the same thing as when you go to the dentist to get a cavity filled, They do the work, and afterwards you have some pain.
It may help to put some heat on your bladder area, or take some medication. Feel better soon :)

I don't know why, but I also get cramps. Using tampons does it to me too. I assume it's normal, I mean, having your cervix poked at and scraped is bound to cause some reaction.
