If your car is fairly high mileage, its likely that when you switch off the engine the oil that has been supplied to the valve gear is draining down the worn valve stems into the cylinders. The piston rings have also collected oil when running, which will be directed into the cylinder on cold starting, as the metal shrinks when cooled. When you start the engine after its cooled the oil from both sources will burn off and then clear as the engine warms up again. It will not get any better, only worse as the mileage increases, it does not mean your engine is about to explode, as some cars can do many thousands of miles in that condition. However it does mean your next m.o.t. may be compromised when it comes to emission tests. With out seeing the car in action, so to speak, I can only assume from the symptoms you describe and past experience as an engineer, that the time is getting near for you to think about having the engine overhauled.

I was told by my Dad that white smoke is usually steam. I have the same problem and it sometimes comes out of the bonnet too. I was told that these symptoms indicate head gasket problem. I took my air filter out which was jammed up and this seems to have stopped the exhaust smoke. My radiator just keeps losing water from somewhere and it's almost new!

Does this white smoke last? If it's just brief, more than likely condensation in exhaust so no big deal. Now if it does this all the time you have a water leak mostlikely blown headgasket.

if it is a diesel then it could be the glow plugs not coming on causing incomplete combustion, if it is a petrol and it only happens on cold mornings then it could be condensation, if it happens all the time it could be the valve stem seals leaking a small amount of oil into the engine, if it smokes when it is warm then take it to a garage you have a serious problem

the white smoke is actually the steam. ur head gas ket might have gone wrong. ur engine actually get some coolant fluid in cumbustion room (inside the cylinders) = water evaporates and u get so much steam comming out of the exhust.

If it only lasts a few minutes (until the engine is warm) Then it's only condensation and you have nothing to worry about. It's perfectly normal
