I am unclear what stars are even for. When it first started, I would star a question I thought was interesting. It was supposed to be the reason for the star, so I starred a lot of questions I thought were good questions. I hae stopped doing that now because I don't get the point of it anymore. I also am unclear about "top contributor." I suppose it means you answer a lot of questions. I don't believe it means anything else but that.
Anyway, I'll give you a star for this question because it gives us all a chance to read other's opinions. Thanks.

No. The point of stars is to let other people know you think a question is worth checking out, but people just ask for them because they like stars and it brightens their day for some sad reason. It's just something for bragging rights.

No, you don`t get any points for stars, but you get them for thumbs up on a best answer, depending on how many thumbs up you get. You`re allowed up to 50 points on thumbs up on best answers a week.
