They're named alphabetically, the first storm of the season will begin with the letter A. The naming is alternate male, female, male, female name. The first storm of the season also alternates between male and female names.

In a particularly bad season, like the one we saw in 2005, once the alphabet has been exhausted (not all letters are used - I think it's 21 in total) the storms are given the names of Greek letters - Alpha, Beta, Gamma etc.

If it's a particularly nasty one, a person on the weather
channel will name it after their ex-spouse. It's usually the
female ones that are the worst.
