It is 2000km via the most direct route, according to Google Maps. If you don't speed, that's about 20 hours of driving.

You should really bring a passport. You might still be able to cross the border with your birth certificate and drivers license, at least until next year, but why take a chance? U.S. border patrol doesn't have to let you across if they don't feel like it. If you have a valid passport and you're not smuggling anything, they have no reason to keep you out.

According to my lovely software Microsoft Streets & Trips. The distance is 1,239 miles.
That is the itinerary:
Edmonton - Saskatoon - Regina - Minot - Fargot - St-Paul.

No passport needed for an American as long as you have a driver licence with a picture on it ... or a birth certificate fitting with your driver licence.
