I just purchased an old converted corner grocery store in New Orleans Garden District. It has no heating system. I will be forced to use window units without heaters until i can get central air and heat installed which unfortunately will not be this year.

what is a safe way to heat my home?

Even though we live in Michigan and have a natural gas furnace, we will be purchasing a pellet stove next fall. Pellet stoves have tthe capacity to burn corn or pellets or a corn/pellet mix. These are very efficient and we will be able to heat our home at a fraction of what it costs to use a gas furnace. These stoves are usually outside and the heat is pumped into the house, I guess it depends on how you want to set it up, but that's how we'll be doing it. One other thing, we intend to buy the pellets by the pallet, so extra storage space will be needed as well.
Hope it helps.

Gas heaters, properly installed are safe and effective. You should need one for each room and gas heat is cheaper than many other ways.

I use one of those gas stoves that looks like a fireplace. They have them in every size and they are very cost effective and beautiful. If you are not interested in how it looks, then just buy a wall mount gas stove.
