I just purchased an old converted corner grocery store in New Orleans Garden District. It has no heating system. I will be forced to use window units without heaters until i can get central air and heat installed which unfortunately will not be this year.

what is a safe way to heat my home?

If you haven't bought those window units yet, get window units that are heat pumps. They'll cool in the summer and you can use them to heat in the winter.

However, assuming you've already bought the window units, I like the self-contained-oil electric heaters. They look something like the old-fashioned radiators that were used in homes to heat until sometime in the 40s or 50s. They're usually beige in color and can be found a Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes and I'm sure other places as well.

Up here in the North country a lot of small places use what are called "space heaters" a small furnace that sits next to a chimney opening and is vented through the chimney, they run, usually on city gas or propane gas.
These are both efficient and can save the property owner money instead of a large furnace where none are required. Check with your local Co-op they sometimes carry them.
Sears, Home Depot, etc.
