It really has no benefit...the engine is still using the same amount of gas to keep the car idoling. All you are doing by changing gears is putting wear and tare on you transmission...i would not recommend doing it.

If you have an Auto and your going to be sitting for a long time in traffic then yes put it into N, this will let pressure off the trans so it will not get a "heat soak" from sitting.

Your Auto trans cools it's self off by A moving air over a cooler in front of your radator or B a small cooler thats inside the radator or C both.

When you sitting no cool air moves over the trans cooler unless the fan is going, but even then it's only so much as well if the cooler is in the radator it depends on the fan being run by the engine or electric fan.

Also putting the trans in N the engine also does better by not being under load, you can see this for yourself by shifting into N or P and the engine idles up, thats because it's not under load.

If you put it in P or N the engine and trans will be happy and you will also use less gas. I would put it in P as if you day dream you wont roll back or forward into a car.

As well If you know your going to be stoped for a long time it's better to shut off your car this would be for mid 90's to now cars / trucks as TBI injection and carb cars take more gas to start back up.

I have a few books on auto tans as well even my 98 Jeep book says this. So dsepite people here with personal ideas I know for fact that you can do this.

I don't recommend doing it at every red traffic light, because it has no benefits over leaving it in drive, but if your stopped for a longer time, like at a train crossing, then you can put it in park or neutral so that you don't have to keep your foot on the brake the whole time. But the main reason is because holding the brakes for that long if they are overheated, will warp the rotors, or discs.

Yes its recommended. But when you do so, make sure your hand brakes are turned up. Coz u might have the risk of being on a sloping area and ur car might hit the front/read vehicle.

So you gotta watch the lights and when its about to turn green, take out the hand brake and go for the first gear.

If it is an automatic, just leave it drive or if you have a long wait then put it in park and shut off the engine.

If it is a stick, then you can put it in neutral if it will be a while, for longer periods, leave it in gear and turn off the motor and let the clutch out. Shorter periods, just hold in the clutch.

the respond isn't any. an computerized transmission is designed to be in kit whilst thoroughly nonetheless and pulling the handbrake thoroughly defeats the point of having the footbrake besides. in case you would be conscious the hand brake is wisely called the emergency brake or the parking brake neither of which you're doing at a site visitors easy.

Dont know if its bad, but i drive an auto and when i'm in traffic that isn't moving i put it on neutral and use d hand brake too if i'm on a sloppy ground. i do dis just to relieve my leg not that its saving fuel or engine workout

yes it is better. if you leave it in drive for extended periods it can ruin ur automatic transmission. it can also be dangerous because u may slightly let your foot off the brake without realising and slowly run up the back of the car in front of you.

If you have a standard put it in neutral and let off the clutch if you have an automatic leave it in drive.

Keep it in gear, you never know when you might need to get on the gas quick and get out of the way in case someone is about to hit you.
