Let width be x ft and length be y ft.
y = 3x + 5
2x + 2y = 74
2x + 2(3x + 5) = 74
8x + 10 = 74
8x = 64
x = 8
Width = 8 ft
Length = 29 ft

If x is the width, then the length is 5+3x and the perimeter is 10+8x = 74.

Therefore, the width x is (74-10)/8 = 8 feet and the length is 5+3x, namely: 29 feet.

If x = width, then 3x + 5 = length

74 = 2(3x+5) + 2x
74 = 6x + 10 + 2x
74 = 8x + 10
64 = 8x
8 = x

The width is 8 ft. and the length is 29 ft.

Hope this helps,

P = 74
L = 3 W + 5
2 ( 3 W + 5 + W ) = 74
2 ( 4 W + 5 ) = 74
8 W + 10 = 74
8 W = 64
W = 8
L = 3(8) + 5 = 29

Let, width = x, length = 3x + 5
2(width + length) = perimeter
2(x + 3x + 5) = 74
4x + 5 = 37
x = 32/4
x = 8

width = 8 ft, length = 29 ft

L=5+3W
p=2L + 2W
74=2(5+3W) + 2W
74=10 + 6W + 2W
(74-10)/8 = W
8ft = W
L = 5+3(8) = 29 ft

let
W = width
L = length

2 (L + W) = Perimeter
2 (L + W) = 74
but L = 3W + 5 so..
2 (3W + 5 + W) = 74
2(4W + 5) = 74
8W + 10 = 74
8W = 74 - 10
8W = 64
W = 64/8
W = 8 ft.
since
L = 3W + 5 substitute 8 we have
L = 3(8) + 5
L = 24 + 5
L = 29 ft.
