You need a case, power supply, motherboard, processor, RAM and video card. A monitor if you don't already have one... same applies for a keyboard and mouse. Almost all motherboards have built-in sound and network cards, so you probably don't have to worry about that. Of course your intended usage for the desktop determines which components you should be buying.

Good online sellers are Newgg.com and Tigerdirect.com- great prices, but you need to know what you're buying. I suggest having a friend who's used to building systems help you order- it's very easy to buy incompatible components if you're not familiar with hardware specs.

The main hardware components you'll need are...

processor, motherboard, ram, hard drive, power supply and case

That's all you need to get it running; all cabling will be included with any retail motherboard you buy and almost every processor will come with putty and a heat-sink/fan.
Depending on how much you've got to spend depends on what fancy extras and what manufactures you should go for. You will probably want to get a CD or DVD drive of some description but all other extras aren't really essential unless you want to use the PC for specific purposes. The best advice I'd give to someone who is building there first PC is buy what is known as a bundle. This basically is a set which includes the 3 most essential components processor, motherboard and ram. These bundles are fairly good value and there guaranteed to work together; these components have to match (correct manufacturer and socket size) so the bundle saves making mistakes.

you should just check out www.newegg.com
and www.tigerdirect.com
those are good places to get really good parts for cheaper than a brick and mortar store
and they both have customer reviews so you kno if the parts are bad
