I don't understand why so many people are obsessed with their favorite presidential candidate raising money. Isn't the election based on who gets the most votes, not on who raises the most money? It's not like you need tens of millions of dollars to get on the ballot or anything. What really pisses me off it how the "news" takes a candidate seriously if he or she raises lots of money but basically ignores them is they don't raise a lot of money. Has our election system been replaced with an auction or what?

No, it's all about the money.

More money means more advertising, which means more "brand name" recognition.

For about the past 25~35 years, the winner is generally the person who is more well-known and more familiar -- and more liked. All of those are dependent on advertising, which costs money.

Yea it does take that much to get on a ballot. For instance a 30 second spot during a Super Bowl costs 2.7 million. Though candidates don't pay that much much of their political costs are for TV advertisement!

I think the face of that is changing as we are seeing a lot of campaigning being done on the web. But even those cost money if put on a site that is frequented often, like the news!

I agree that too many people spend their whole time in office raising money, usually getting money through corporate lobbyist or soft money! ! They should be banned. Corporations do not vote!

The amount of screen time candidates get is a function of how much money they've raised.

you need to have money in order to campaign. TV/radio spots, flyers, posters, billboards, private jet flights from iowa to new hampshire and back again... all those expenses really add up. you have to pay your staff, run your website, pay off talk show hosts to let you babble for 10 minutes, and install that new jacuzzi in your back yard--campaigning is pricey business!

They keep having a bad run at the Golden Nugget, and are looking for donors for their weekend away.
