Hi there, I am located in Southern California - Orange County. Do I need to get a permit to have my central air conditioning unit replaced?
Do you know how I go about getting this done?
The unit was actually installed already but the rumor on my block is that our home owners association is after me for a permit... The unit was installed last month... I have no clue what to do here...

any ideas?

Permit for an AC?! Never heard of such a thing. You may check your contract over to be sure though. Did you check your contract prior to installation?

If this is just a rumor, it will die soon, but if it is truth, your association will contact you and should give the details. If no details are provided .... ASK!

For air conditioning and heating mechanical and electrical permits are required. These permits are generally issued by your local inspections department in whatever municipality you reside in. Basic this is a safety measure to ensure that all the work done was done up to the mechanical and electrical codes. You'd be surprised to see the shoddy and dangerous work done by people who think they know what they are doing. If something were to happen with a dangerous installation and your insurance company found out you did not get a permit for the work they may not pay. Get a permit and do it legally according to all codes for safety and financial sake.
