Some people have a really tough time accepting any compliments from others, and resist stupid unthinking flattery. Also, I think it depends on the encouragement you receive. If you think someone does not really understand your situation, because they can't be bothered to think about what you are going through very deeply or even spend a minimal amount of time listening to you, then the encouragement is kind of empty. Also, is it possible that it's not really encouragement at all but manipulation? This is especially true of family members. For example, if you were 40 pounds overweight and lost 5 pounds, then your family started overly lavishing praise on you, you'd think they were really telling you to lose a lot more weight quickly.
Also, there is probably the matter of privacy. It's possible someone does not want to talk about the situation to the person who is giving praise, even though his/her intentions were good.

i'm going to start off by saying I would never choose to see life through Jesus' eyes. I would like break down or something. I can't even imagine how hard it must have been for him. It'd be way too stressful for a human being nowadays. I don't really now who's eyes I'd like to see through. Maybe one of my friends. She's so opposite of me. I'd like to know what it is to have a positive attitude on the world and everything.

If you are encouraging to a person and that person is critical of that, then they might have low self-esteem.
If one person is encouraging you and another is critical of that, they are either jealous of your positive attention, or they think that what you are doing doesn't encourage attention. Either way, criticism is a way for a person to feel good about themselves by making you feel bad.
