I saw this movie a few times and I really enjoyed it. I know that this movie can hold a lot of messages, but I'm wondering what everyone else got from it? The message I get from it is that in order for everyone to go on living their 'happy, ignorant' existence, Donnie had to die - otherwise the truth and denial would be exposed...

I was under the impression that it was about the philosophy of time travel. It was a predestination paradox. Because he burned down the pervert's house, his mother had to chaperone the girls on their trip. The engine from their plane went through the portal to twenty eight days earlier and crashed into Donnie's room. He knew what would in the "tangeant" universe he had been living in for the last 28 days so he sacrificed himself for the sake of the "reality" universe.

I'm not sure of a "meaning", but I believe the story was one of second chances. Like the saying "live your life as though it's your second time around".

Being given advanced knowledge of his death, he is able to do the things that he feels he must do before he dies. I don't think it has anything to do with keeping people happy & ignorant, in fact I think the opposite is true.

It also illustrates the significance that one person plays in the lives of many people.

I liked this movie also, and I think you're pretty close to being on target. However, I also saw some time travel elements there. Not sure though. The movie also had a great soundtrack!

The meaning of the movie deals highly with time travel. He must go back in time, to warn himself about the future... I think.

It is not obvious that the movie had a "meaning"; movies are meant to entertain (and make money), not to have some deep meaning or significance. You have probably heard the famous quip. "If you want to deliver a message, send a telegram."
