I believe I actually found a fairy ring when I was a child. I walked into it and knew it was someplace special.
I was playing in the woods behind our house with some friends, and I got seperated from the other children. There was this briar patch and I found a path going through it. I followed the path and found several young pines all growing in circles. I entered and I immediately felt like I was in someone's home and that I was welcome there. It was a very peaceful place and I was struck by how cool it was. I started yelling for my friends to come and check it out, but they couldn't find the path through the briars. Finally I decided to go back and show them the path. I walked back up the path and went and found my friends, but I was never able to find my way back there again, and I looked for it often.
So yeah, I'd check it out again.

I would first observe, but later join in, but I have seen them before and entered yet nothing happened. Probably because at the time I didn't know or believe.

Ah, quiet and honored is what I was when I found some in Killarney.
Once another person came around as the fairies began their dance....they tried to take a flash picture and there was suddenly nothing there but an idiot with a camera and an angry old man.

"Join in"?
Fairy ring - any of numerous mushrooms of meadows and open woods that spread in rings originating from mycelial growth.
I know that faerie rings are supposed to be those *places* where fairies gather to dance (and/or celebrate). Personally, I would not join in with the mushrooms by choice.
If I saw a bunch of midgets dancing in a circle in the middle of the woods at night, well, I'd want to know if they were doing drugs before I joined in. Mushrooms do *not* sound like an interesting form of entertainment to me.

Jesus, run away. Loads of Irish stories end really badly for the people who interfere with the practices of fairies. They are not really to be trusted, and love to cause mischief, especially if they don't get the respect that they should.

Don't do it!!
You'll be sucked into the faerie realm, if its twilight or dawn. you'll feast, play chess with faerie kings, go on a couple of wild hunts, and when you come back one hundred years will have passed and you'll crumble to dust when you step back onto mortal soil.
Do not trust the fey folk!
