It depends on where you live. Roaches have one great weakness but not everyone can take advantage of it.
1. Roaches greatest weakness is their exoskeleton. Unlike most insects they use paraffin wax as a waterproofer. Their chitin is porous and can not hold water without the paraffin. Paraffin however is not nearly as good at holding in water. Therefore roaches are very susceptible to drying out. However the best way to take advantage of this is to live in an area of low humidity. If you do then make sure all faucets do not drip and cover your drains (all of them including your bathroom and kitchen sinks and your bathtub. Toilets are designed to prevent bugs from climbing in and out). This alone will go a long way to reducing their populationeven if you live in a more humid area. You can add sprays if you wish.
2. fill all cracks and breeding areas with chaulking.
3. Repainting will fill many cracks used for hiding, especially if you use a thick paint.
4. Buy some diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it under appliances and in other areas roaches frequent but can not be chaulked. Diatomaceous earth is made from the cell walls of single celled organisms called diatoms. These diatoms build their cell wall from glass. Thus this is powdered glass so fine that it can not possibly cut you. However the powder is like tiny daggers to roaches. They run across it and get punctured by the shards and then their body dries out. It can be bought in garden shops and home centers. It takes a little searching.
BTW my students tried to microwave one for several minutes. It emerged alive.
