fertilization is required for a fetus to be formed. the fetus is the result of embryonic develoment from a zygote - the product of fertilization. only one sperm will fertilize the egg although the other sperm cells are important in dissolving the membranes that cover the egg cell.

It takes 2 to make a baby, the sperm plasma membrane fuses with the egg plasma membrane to create a cell with a complete genome. This triggers cell division and development that eventually implants into the endometrium of the uterus and, while being nurtured by the mothers womb forms a fetus.

It is the egg that becomes an embryo after being fertilized by at least one sperm. That is what grows into the fetus after implantation.
