ok, open itunes, and then make sure that you're online, and then click on the "store" button at the top of the main itunes window.
See, since you've formatted your computer, and then re-installed itunes, itunes thinks that you're using a different computer.
in the drop down menu you will see an option to "authorize computer"
(itunes allows users to have up to five computers authorized to play itunes music)
You will need to provide your apple ID (usually your email address) and your password. after you've authorized your machine, connect your ipod. You should be asked if you'd like to copy the files from your ipod to your computer, say yes, and then you should be right as rain.

iTunes is designed to sync one way:
iTunes ----> iPod, not the other way normally. This makes it harder to pirate music, for one thing.
This should help you work around that limitation. It works on mine, but I have an iPod bought in 2004. If you have a newer one, your mileage may vary.
Start with a fresh copy of iTunes installed.
It sounds like you’ve already let the iPod be associated with the copy you have now. Removing and reinstalling iTunes might fix that, but it’s probably easier to just set up another user ID on your PC and log in under it and open iTunes.
Plug in your iPod, after a moment, you should get a message saying the iPod can only be associated with one library. The choices are to “Cancel” “Erase and Sync” or “Transfer Purchases.”
If you want to try the “Transfer Purchases” option, you can. I think Michael L’s method is correct, although I’ve never done it myself. It will only transfer songs you’ve bought, as I understand it. But if you have a bunch of other songs on your iPod that you’ve downloaded or that you’ve ripped from your own CDs, I don’t think that method will recover them.
Instead, try this:
Hit “Cancel” on the message.
It may take a few moments for iTunes to acknowledge this, but once you get control of your mouse cursor, you should see your iPod in the left window of iTunes.
Go back to Windows and see if your iPod is visible in “My Computer.” If so, you can skip the next step. If not, go back to iTunes now.
Select your iPod in iTunes and then “Enable disk use.”
Now when you go to “My Computer” it should be visible as an additional disk drive.
sarah81783 had the right idea too. Make sure Windows is set to display hidden files like she said. Then go into your iPod via “My Computer” and find a hidden (dimmed) folder called “iPod_Control” then “Music”
“Music” is where your files are. But they’ll be named weird things like “CSGM.mp3” or “FSDK.m4a” and so on and be contained in a bunch of other folders. So don’t worry about that. Just copy the entire “Music” folder to your C:/ drive. It might take a while, especially if you have tons of songs.
Once complete, you’ll need to check the properties of the “Music” folder on your computer and change it from “Read Only” and “Hidden” in order for it to behave normally in the future.
Go back to iTunes and clear the “Enable disk use” option. You should be able to disconnect the iPod now.
Now you can go into iTunes (back under your normal Windows User ID if you wish) and choose “File” “Add Folder to Library” Choose the “Music” folder.
This will import everything back into your library, including your purchased songs. If you had the ID tags, song names, etc edited, that info should show up again too.
A bit long and seems complex, but if you’re comfortable in Windows, you should be able to handle this.
Good luck, let me know if it works, or e-mail me via my profile if you have questions.

okay easy, first you might want to back up the songs on a disc first just incase you delete them:
1. open itunes
2.click your ipod icon(once ipod is plugged in)
3. scroll down to options(very bottom of screen)
4. click the tab that says: manually manage music.
5. violla, you can now manually add songs to your ipod
if you do delete your songs, you can contact itunes and they will send you copies of your songs to download, but they only do it once and once only

Open it and each of the hidden folder has your songs. Copy each and put them in another folder.
