Two weeks ago I stepped off a pourch and my ankle collapsed and I heard a snap. It swelled up like a baseball on the outter ankle bone. i went to a walk in doctor place and they did xrays and said they didn't see a break and gace me an air cast and told me to stay off it. Basicly I have 2 kids and I have to work so staying off it wasn't much of an option. I limped around for a couple days and then I could put enough weight on it to walk while still wearing the cast. Anyways, my foot and ankle still hurt and it's swollen but not that badly and it's very bruised on the whole outer side of my foot. The paper the doc gave me said that when an injury first occurs a small fracture isn't always visible and that a sprain would be better in a week. I'm just looking for opinions on wether or not I should spend the money to see a doctor again so that if it is broken I don't cause permenent damage.

It's always better to get a second opinion when you are in doubt. Better safe than sorry.

I sprained my ankle some time ago, a 3rd degree sprain, while jumping on a mini trampoline. When I came down on my foot it turned under and I jumped actually below the level of gravity with all my weight onto the ankle. It crunched so loud that I was certain I had broken it, plus it swelled up so bad that I couldn't even get my show off only a few minutes after the accident happened. All the xrays showed no sign of a break and I wasn't even allowed to use it for 3 weeks until the swelling went down. Then it was put into an air cast and I still was not allow to walk on it but could rest it on the floor. It took a good year to get my ankle back into walking condition and even now, any weather change or any reason I get swelling in me, the ankle swells first. I'm guessing that you did a similar thing to your ankle and most likely did not break it but stretched a tendon or ligament more than it was suppose to be stretched and that was the sound of the cracking noise. I suggest you do keep it up and stay off of it until you are able because it needs to heal and you need to favor it until it does or it won't get any better. If after a good 6 weeks of babying it and doing what the doctor says, it is still giving you trouble, you may need to go into physical therapy. I had to for 6 months with my sprain. If you do have a small fracture in your foot, it is most likely only a slight crack and not through the entire bone. They would do the same treatment for that, that they are doing for the sprain which is for you to stay off of it for 4 to 6 weeks. It takes 6 weeks for a bone to heal so staying off of it and favoring it with the air cast is the exact perscription that any doctor will tell you to do. If you aren't better in 6 weeks, that is when they would start physical therapy anyway so give your family a doctor a call and ask him if you can be sent to a physical therapist clinic. If you favor it now, you won't pay later for not taking proper care of it.

Get it looked at by another doctor, and please stay off that foot. He should have given you crutches, but a good pair can be gotten at a thrift shop if you have to pay for them.
