James Gordon Brown (b. 1951) served as Chancellor of the Exchequer* under Prime Minister Tony Blair from 1997 to 2007 before moving into the number one spot in the Labour Party. A native of Glasgow, Prime Minister Brown was the son of a Church of Scotland minister. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh, from which he holds a Ph.D. in history, and also worked as a journalist on Scottish television before becoming an MP from Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbirth in 1983.

*The US equivalent of this office would be Secretary of the Treasury.
P. S. "Gordon Bennett" is a British term meaning "shock or surprise"--obviously namlevran's reply (two posts down) is a sarcastic response. [As a Texan, I constantly find myself looking up British slang.]
