In a perfect world, a 45 degree angle would be nice, but you don't say if everything is square on your post/porch now. Perhaps the easiest way is to take the material you wish to use as the brace and hold it up against the post and porch, (overlapping the ends) until you find the angle that you like. Draw a line on the support using the post and the porch as a guide for your pencil. You probably will need a helper to hold everything while you judge the angle and draw the lines. I agree it is best to use 2x6 with your 6" posts. This is assuming the width of the 2x6, (the 5 1/2 inch side) is what attaches to the post and porch. Then simply duplicate this support as many times as you need support pieces to keep them all uniform.

AS long as you pick the same angle pairs for both sides it will look OK. a 2x6 might be better than a 2x4 for support.

I would recommend a 45 degree angle for all the cuts. The part of the cut piece that will touch the post will have its 45 degree angle facing the opposite way from the opposite side that will touch the porch top. Think of it this way:
... ______
1 /______\ 2 Side 1 is vertical and touches post. Side 2 is horizontal and touches ceiling.

If it is a 90 degree angle at the top of the post right now, it would be a 45 degree angle on both ends of the braces.

If not 90 degree at top, just hold your 2x4 up letting it overhang the post and the porch ledger and scribe a line on each end flush with the post and the ledger.

I am not %100 sure what you are describing but you have posts that you want to be more secure so you want to put 2X4's that attach to the center of each post and meet between the center of the two posts up top? Which would make YY, according to this little Y diagram two posts and four 2x4's? If that is correct simply use Pythagorean Theroum; A2xB2=C2. Or you could could send me the measurements directly to me through email. Also if I don't have the Y diagram correct please maybe find a pic on a google images or something. So email me back. Thanks

No not exactly???

"Y" type LOOK?

I want to assume the 6x6 are square, and what purpose then is a "Y"

Obviously to create supports for a 6x6 square post the RIGHT angles of any material used would be CORRECT, in surrounding the posts. A Chop saw can accomplish that.

id go with 45 degrees, and id double up on the 2 x 4 s and put them on edge , not the way your thinking of installing them.dril piolet holes and shoot long screws in.
