Is it illegal to drive a car with bad body damage? I saw this sedan car who's whole right side was damaged. The window was smashed out in the back right window and both doors were all messed up...but the tail lights were fine though. Im just curious.

Some states have more stringent laws regarding body damage than others. Many states that require annual safety inspections will often let most body damage go until you have to report to inspection. If it is deemed to be unsafe it will not pass inspection.

However, they will not permit cars to operate with an obstructed view, non-functioning lights, damaged parts sticking out creating a hazard etc.

When I see cars like that I just assume they were just in an accident. I had the front end of a car smashed in but it still ran. I drove it to the repair place so I wouldn't have to set up or pay for a tow truck, though I supposed my insurance company should have covered that. Oh well.

No it is not illegal in the south side of Tucson, Az. Most of the cars smoke, missing windows, missing-damaged body parts. The local altertnative radio station holds an annual "hoopty car show" once a year here

So long as no parts will fly off the car while driving, I can't see why it would be a problem. His vision is not impaired on the front and rear windscreen(that matters ) and the functioning of the vehicle was still OK. It will be a cold one in the winter.
