...do you let them go ahead or try not to make eye contact?

I'd probably let them in!
Unless they were snooty, and talking on the cel phone, and looking at their watch repeatedly, and making those little noises someone makes when they are getting impatient, and looking around for a less busy check out line, and has a sour look on their face!
They can wait!

I let them go ahead of me after I check and make sure there isn't a line of people behind them with just a few items !!! lol

I would want someone to do it for me, although I have to admit, there have been a few times where I didnt even notice the person behind me, til I was already being scanned.

Once, I let someone go in front of me, even though I loaded everything on the belt

if i'm in a good mood i might let them go on ahead, but if i've been waiting forever in line (which puts me in a bad mood), then no probably not

depends if there is an express lane open. If not then I will let them go ahead, but if there is one open, I don't, I figure they can go to that.
