Well there are many GREAT Rock Bands,but they were in the 80's.
Try listening to Styx,Eagles,Def Leppard,Heart to name a few.
There were many more.
I don't find the Rock Bands as entertaining now, they are very loud, you can't make out the music or the words.

Well, then your in luck, cause rock has a great amount of diversity ranging from the heavy metal you don't like, to the crappy bands listed by the first two who gave answers. Personally I like bands like Snow Patrol, Jimmy Eat World, Guster (whom I strongly recommend seeing live), Dave Matthews, Muse and classic U2. Even that list has its differences from the Alt. Rock of Muse and Jimmy Eat World to the College anthem rock of Guster. But, again its all based on your tastes, and there's plenty out there for you to try out and find what you like.

wolf parade is the coolest but new pornographers is pretty close. all these bands arent that noisy but very pleasant to listen to. they are the finest in indie rock
