Be honest.
I've been in customer service for quite a while. The key is not to sell someone something that truely does not work for them. If you are honest and sell them the lower priced dress (example) that actually looks better on them, they will remember that and return when they need a nice outfit. (They'll also tell friends) As opposed to lying to make a buck and having them realize it didn't work. (Believe me, they'll REALLY tell their friends that expierence.) Then you're in real trouble.

All relationships are about trust. And it is a relationship that you are trying to build even if it is for the few minutes you are with your buyer.

First, OBSERVE, make note of what the person is wearing, carrying, doing.

Then, USE what you see about the person to make a connection, by this I mean that if she is wearing riding clothes, say something related to riding, if she is carrying a bag with a picture of a dog, has a charm bracelet with lots of children charms, say something related, but always remain honest and sincere. People can always sense if you are being fake.

ASK them what it is they think about..., not philosophically, but about the matter at hand. But be careful, some people do not want to talk too much and other love to talk, it is this ability to read people and what makes them happy and being able to adjust, that will make you successful, not only as a salesperson but also as a Friend.

P.S. Always remember to be kind and helpful to those around you and your teammates.

Focus and concentrate on your customer.
If you have repeat customers write down their name in a small notebook. Also, make a note of what she purchased, on which date.

If she pays by credit card, you will be able to get the name and refer to the customer by her name: Hello Mrs. Wealth, how may I help you today. When you see her, ask if she would like another FauxFawn lipstick?
It's about making the customer comfortable.

People like to hear their own name.

Listen. Listen. Listen to the customer and try to identify his/her pain point and then relate how your product or service can make this particular pain point go away.

Hope this helps.
