It's science. The point is to understand our universe and how it works. Sometimes the small steps don't look like they are worth the cost, but when a major technological breakthrough happens everybody is more than happy to reap the benefits. Most of the technology you used to post this question would not be here if many minor breakthroughs (that the average people of their time thought were pointless) hadn't happened first. Because of those minor breakthroughs you can communicate with diverse cultures around the world in real time where it used to take weeks or months to send a message, you can access vast stores of information at a click of the mouse that used to take long hours of research in massive libraries.... or you can download porn or sit back and just complain about things. It's your choice how you use what possibly has the greatest potential of anything mankind had came up with so far from our eons of "pointless" experimenting.
