I was looking at a gold bar from Switzerland and saw the price. I am not a gold collector but thought about investing money in small gold ingots once a year.

Thanks to al in advance for answering with real information and not unrelated answers.

9999 stamped on gold means that it is 99.99% pure gold. This number is know as "Fineness." So, 9999 is also know as "four nines fine". The purest gold made today is six nines fine. http://www.invest.gold.org/sites/en/glossary/

.9999 is refined gold (highly refined---that means very little impurities like silver, iron and copper are in the total mix)...it's really pure, only a few mints in the world make such Gold bullion/bars with that purity. (Canada is one of them). I have never heard of 999.9 purity gold. If you see it on the bar itself, it may mean something completely different. Check with the bank that issued the bar/ingot with that number and find out what it really means...or go to a reputable gold/silver dealer and that person should be able to tell you what it means. Ingots are large bars of metal. They usually weigh (based on the type of metal) quite a bit and are usually much larger than a smaller bar. Sizes vary from bank to bank.....but ingots can be as small as six by 3 by 4 inches in volume...and they can get larger.

It's basically a way of saying that the bar is MOSTLY purely gold, as in its atoms have the properties of the element Gold, but maybe something like 0.0001% of the bar is made up of other minerals. It's not a way of cheating you, it's just that gold purification techniques aren't perfect.
