depends what you're looking for. LV might be construed as "more exciting" so if that's what you want, go to LV. If your tastes run to things a little more peaceful, head to Reno and be sure to drive over to Lake Tahoe, which has several major casinos on its South Shore, PLUS the beauty of the Lake and tons of nature-type things to do. The huge forest fire actually happened in Meyers which is further south of the "tourist" area.

Las Vegas

you would have to compare downtown las vegas to Reno in terms of casinos and fun and still las vegas would win. There is no comparison between the Strip and Reno however, las vegas is a far more exciting town, miles ahead of Reno in that department imo

The area close to the casinos in Reno is much more seedy and grimy than the las vegas Strip but Reno is located in a nicer part of Nevada than las vegas is and within 20 miles of downtown reno there are a list of outdoor activities one can do (yes there are plenty in las vegas too but I think the surrounding mountains and lakes make reno more picturesque)

Las Vegas is more strong fun and very excited than Reno, but Reno is more beautiful than Las Vegas.

Gambling, strip hotels, over priced shopping, food and shows, Vegas. Oh and street hookers, can't forget them.

If you have any interest outside of those go to Reno, Tahoe is right around the corner and the South Shore area that burned is about an hour and a half away. Especially if you do any outdoor sports. The airport is much better too.

I'm biased, I hate Vegas! Been twice. They do have sweet hotels though, stayed at the Mandalay both times, it's nice.
